Why Talented Young People Still Can’t Find Their First Opportunity

University graduate searching for career opportunities through the I’M MORE movement focused on confidence, employability and future success

Why Qualifications Alone Are No Longer Enough

One conversation outside our offices recently summed up a challenge that is affecting thousands of young people across the United Kingdom.

A young man stopped to chat. He had graduated from university with a First Class degree in Chemistry. Like many graduates, he believed that years of hard work, commitment and academic achievement would naturally open the door to a successful career.

Instead, he found himself sending out CV after CV, only to receive rejection after rejection.

“I just felt like every time I applied, the answer was no.”

His story is far from unique.

Today, he is working alongside a friend, developing software that aims to improve efficiency within the NHS by creating systems that save time and help organisations work more effectively. His talent never disappeared. His ambition never disappeared. What was missing was the opportunity to demonstrate what he could do.

That conversation reinforced something we believe strongly at I’M MORE.

The issue facing young people is not simply about qualifications. It is increasingly about connection, confidence and access to opportunity.

Leaving Education Should Be the Beginning, Not the End

Whether someone leaves school at sixteen, completes college at eighteen or graduates from university in their early twenties, there is often an expectation that the next step will naturally present itself.

For many, it does not.

Some leave education with excellent qualifications but very little practical experience. Others have enthusiasm and determination but struggle to communicate their strengths through a CV alone. Many simply don’t know where to begin, while employers often receive hundreds of applications for a single vacancy.

The result is frustration on both sides.

Young people begin questioning their own ability, while employers continue searching for people with the right attitude, confidence and workplace skills.

Qualifications Open Doors, But They Don’t Always Unlock Them

Education remains incredibly valuable. It develops knowledge, discipline and technical understanding.

However, employers are often looking for much more than qualifications.

They are looking for people who can:

  • Communicate confidently
  • Solve problems
  • Work as part of a team
  • Adapt to change
  • Demonstrate a willingness to learn

These are qualities that cannot always be measured by examination results alone.

That is why practical experience, mentoring, confidence and personal development are becoming increasingly important in today’s employment market.

Every Young Person Deserves the Chance to Be Seen

One of the most common frustrations we hear is that applications disappear into a system without anyone truly seeing the person behind the CV.

A piece of paper cannot always capture resilience.

It cannot always measure determination.

It rarely reflects kindness, creativity, leadership or character.

Yet these are often the qualities that make outstanding employees.

At I’M MORE, we believe employers should have more opportunities to meet people, understand their potential and recognise strengths that may never appear within a traditional recruitment process.

Building Better Connections Between Employers and Emerging Talent

There is no shortage of talented young people.

There is no shortage of employers looking for good people.

The challenge is creating stronger connections between the two.

I’M MORE exists to help build those connections by bringing together employers, educators, training providers and young people within a supportive environment where confidence can grow, practical skills can develop and opportunities become visible.

Sometimes the difference between success and disappointment is not talent.

It is simply having someone who opens the right door.

A Future Built on Potential

The young graduate I met is now helping develop technology that could improve the way parts of the NHS operate.

His journey reminds us that potential does not disappear because someone struggles to secure their first job.

Sometimes talent simply needs time, encouragement and the right opportunity to be recognised.

That is why I’M MORE exists.

Not to define people by where they are today, but to help them discover where they could be tomorrow.

Every young person deserves the opportunity to be seen.

Every employer deserves the opportunity to discover great people.

When those two things come together, everyone wins.
